How to Get to Great Falls from Washington DC

There are two main ways to access the Great Falls of the Potomac—from the Virginia side or the Maryland side. Both are part of the National Park System and offer scenic views, but the experience differs slightly between the two.

We visited the Maryland side, entering through the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center in Potomac. It was an easy and scenic 30-minute drive from downtown Washington, DC, via I-495 and the Clara Barton Parkway. The entrance is well-marked, and parking is close to the trailheads, bathrooms, and picnic areas.

If you're visiting Great Falls Washington DC without a car, public transit options are limited, so driving is your best bet. Ride-share services like Uber or Lyft are another option, especially if you’re coming from Bethesda or Rockville.

Entrance Fees & Military Discount

We paid a $20 entrance fee per vehicle, which gives you access for 7 consecutive days. However, if you're an active-duty military family, be sure to request the America the Beautiful Military Pass, which grants free access to all national parks including Great Falls Park. You can pick up the pass at the gate with a valid military ID.

For kayaking, rock climbing, or accessing Billy Goat Trail, additional permits or fees may apply—check the National Park Service website for details.

If you're an active-duty U.S. military family (or a dependent), you’re eligible for free entry year-round with the America the Beautiful Military Pass. Just bring a valid military ID!

Best Trails & Overlooks on the Maryland Side:

  • Olmsted Island Trail: This short, scenic boardwalk trail takes you over bridges and through wetlands to one of the most dramatic views of the waterfalls.

  • C&O Canal Towpath Trail: A flat, stroller-friendly trail perfect for walking or biking. Great for families with young kids.

  • Overlook 1: Located near the Visitor Center, this is the best spot for taking photos and safely viewing the power of the Great Falls up close.

  • Billy Goat Trail Section A (Advanced): Not recommended for small kids due to scrambling and steep rock areas.

You’ll see roaring rapids, rocky cliffs, and possibly even kayakers braving the Class V whitewater below. The Potomac River Gorge here is one of the most geologically unique areas in the Mid-Atlantic.

Educational Opportunities for Kids

Great Falls Park isn’t just beautiful—it’s a learning playground for curious kids. From river geology to colonial history, it’s easy to turn your visit into an educational field trip.

Junior Ranger Program

One of the best parts for families is the Junior Ranger Program, offered by the National Park Service. This free activity booklet includes park-related games, challenges, and learning prompts.

  • Ideal for ages 5–12

  • Takes around 30–60 minutes to complete

  • Earn a Junior Ranger badge and certificate

  • Ask for a National Parks Passport stamp at the Visitor Center

The Visitor Center also has educational displays and sometimes hosts ranger talks (especially in spring and fall). This makes it a great stop for homeschool families or kids working on a nature unit.

Are Dogs Allowed in Great Falls Park?

Dogs are allowed in some parts of the park—but not on all trails. On the Maryland side:

  • Dogs are not permitted on Billy Goat Trail or overlook paths

  • Leashed dogs are allowed along the C&O Canal Towpath and picnic areas

We brought our small dog but took turns hiking since she couldn’t go on the main trails. Luckily, there were benches and grassy spots nearby for resting and taking in the view.

The Great Falls of the Potomac is a must-visit destination for families looking to enjoy nature, hike, learn, and unplug from daily life. It’s scenic, accessible, and educational—all rolled into one memorable day trip.

If you're a military family, don't forget to bring your ID and request the America the Beautiful Military Pass for free access. It’s a great way to explore more national parks all year long without extra costs.

We had an amazing time and can’t wait to return—this is one Maryland gem that truly lives up to the hype!

Happy Travels!
