If you're planning to explore beyond the city limits of San Juan—and especially if you're heading to the west coast, El Yunque, Cabo Rojo, or La Parguera—renting a car is highly recommended.
Renting a car gives you freedom and flexibility, allowing you to visit Puerto Rico’s best kid-friendly spots—like secluded beaches, scenic drives, rainforests, and coastal towns—at your own pace.
If staying in San Juan, many top attractions are within walking distance, and it is also easy to get around by Uber.
Where to Rent a Car in Puerto Rico?
That depends on where your flight lands! If arriving at San Juan, the easiest and most convenient place to rent a car is at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan.
Most major U.S. rental car companies—Hertz and Enterprise—operate at or near the airport. Several companies offer shuttle services to nearby rental offices, and some have on-site counters right at the airport terminal.
If arriving at Aguadilla, consider choosing a car rental company at this airport, such as Hertz, Thrifty, or Charlie Car Rental.
Tip: Booking your car rental in advance (especially during holidays and school breaks) is essential, as vehicles can book out quickly on the island.
