Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico with Kids
The best time to visit is from mid-December to April, when the weather is warm and dry. However, this is also peak tourist season. May to November offers fewer crowds and lower prices but a higher chance of rain, especially during hurricane season (June to November).
Do You Need to Rent a Car in Puerto Rico?
If you're planning to explore beyond the city limits of San Juan—and especially if you're heading to the west coast, El Yunque, Cabo Rojo, or La Parguera—renting a car is highly recommended.
Renting a car gives you freedom and flexibility, allowing you to visit Puerto Rico’s best kid-friendly spots—like secluded beaches, scenic drives, rainforests, and coastal towns—at your own pace.
If staying in San Juan, many top attractions are within walking distance, and it is also easy to get around by Uber.
Where to Rent a Car in Puerto Rico?
That depends on where your flight lands! If arriving at San Juan, the easiest and most convenient place to rent a car is at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan.
Most major U.S. rental car companies—Hertz and Enterprise—operate at or near the airport. Several companies offer shuttle services to nearby rental offices, and some have on-site counters right at the airport terminal.
If arriving at Aguadilla, consider choosing a car rental company at this airport, such as Hertz, Thrifty, or Charlie Car Rental.
Tip: Booking your car rental in advance (especially during holidays and school breaks) is essential, as vehicles can book out quickly on the island.
Military Families: Most major car rental companies offer a military discount. We booked our car rental with Enterprise, and when we mentioned we were a military family, they gave us a discount (must show military ID).
Staying in San Juan or Nearby
Caribe Hilton (San Juan) – We stayed at the Caribe Hilton, and highly recommend it! The resort offers a private beach, a beautiful pool area, and kid-friendly amenities. It's conveniently located just minutes from Old San Juan and close to many top attractions. The serene ocean views and family atmosphere made it a standout for our trip.
